While in and of itself information technology may seem benign, the manner in which it is introduced and maintained is not. Like the technologies that preceded it, the Internet is changing the way Indigenous people exchange information. Rightside Response is working with a number of leading Indigenous organisations to design and develop products that apply IT solutions to the business of maintaining traditional protocols. Through this work, Rightside Response has gained important insights into the way Indigenous cultural restrictions interact with multimedia and Internet design and service delivery.

Integrating screen shots, a moving cursor and audio narration, this 15 minute interactive presentation tool - authored in Macromedia's Flash - demonstrates key components of Ara Irititja's electronic database. AICN used the demonstration at UNESCO meetings in Paris and Geneva to explain how Indigenous communities in Australia are using IT advances to preserve, access and manage cultural materials. Downloadable and online streaming versions of the presentation can be accessed from the Ara Irititja web site (www.irititja.com/flash/overview.html).
Rightside Response extracted and prepared hundreds of short
digital video clips from the Ernabella Video Television Archive. The clips
have subsequently been incorporated into several electronic archiving systems
and a variety of digital products. |
